BREAST REDUCTION

BREAST LIFT AND REDUCTION
Large, heavy and sagging or just sagging breasts can be a big psychophysical burden. This problem is solved by surgical reduction and breast suspension.
BREAST REDUCTION CANDIDATES
Strong desire is not the only thing you need to have to be candidate for breast reduction and lift. You need to have breasts that are too big compared to your body, heavy and sagging breasts that cause neck and back pain, and cause skin irritation under the breasts because of their weight. Nipples must be under the inframammary fold. Patients are not good candidates for breast surgery if they are younger than 18 years and if they plan to have kids.
PREOPERATIVE ASSESSMENT
Patient preparation for the breast reduction surgery usually starts during the first examination. The first step in preparation for the surgery is the patient’s consent. Very important part is to create trust in the doctor-patient relationship. The patient will be informed of what needs to be done before the surgery and what surgery includes. During the initial examination you’ll be asked to look in the mirror and show precisely what kind of change you would like to be done to your breasts.
During the examination you will give data of your medical history of illnesses or surgical treatments you had previously, medicine allergies, chronic infections, hypertension, diabetes, anemia. Before the surgery you should stop smoking, as well as taking vitamin C, aspirin and other anti-inflammatory medicines. Information on potential tumors or breast biopsies done on you or close family should be given. If there is positive family anamnesis, a preoperative breast mammography should be performed. Important information for your surgeon is if your breasts change shape during weight reduction or gain. It is very important to give complete information.
With measuring size and shape of the breasts as well as nipple and areola position, examination is done.
BREAST REDUCTION SURGERY PROCEDURE
Various surgical techniques exist and they are depending on shape, size, patient's wish and surgeon's experience. Techniques are classified by different criteria and the most important for the patient are shape of the breasts and scars. Scars can be vertical or T-shaped and can be only around areola. If the ptosis is not too pronounced there are techniques without incisions, combining liposuction and suspension by special sutures or APTOS threads. Depending on technique breast reduction surgery lasts between 2 and 3 hours. It is done under the general anesthesia.
POSTOPERATIVE TREATMENT
After the surgery is complete, patient stays in hospital for one night. Day after the procedure you will be encouraged to get out of bed for short intervals. Avoid lifting, straining and bending. After the surgery, aspiration drains are inserted and they will be there a few days. Sutures stay there 10 to 14 days. A bra needs to be worn postoperative. Scars that are red in the beginning are to be treated for a year after the surgery.
COMPLICATIONS
Complications are very rare. The most common are hematoma, temporary feeling of nipple sensitivity and later complications include scars.
